Hate Crime Concerns
👏🏼So good to engage fully with Surrey Police on this strategy project.
😡Hate Crime is something every member of Pro-Active Community has experienced, almost solely due to having a learning disability.
👏🏼Thank you to Chief Inspector Nolan Heather for taking time out of a very busy schedule to listen to what members had to say about their experiences, fear of reporting, uncertainty where to turn to and what is a real crime?
❓Did you know a hate crime is a criminal act against a person or property that is motivated by hostility or prejudice based on certain characteristics, such as race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or transgender identity. It involves a traditional offense, like assault or vandalism, but with the added element of bias against a protected group.
🤷🏼♀️The statistics for Surrey, the whole County, show only 249 disability hate related crimes reported for the past 12 months which indicates some concern, and raises questions.
❓do people know what they can report
❓do people know where to turn for help
❓do people know how to report a crime against them
✍️Nolan has taken away a lot of learning from the meeting today, but if you can provide the answers to the following questions please do make contact with him to build a better picture from experiences
1. What stops people reporting hate crimes?
2. What can the Surrey police do better to help?
🤝Co-producing an easy read strategy and a more inclusive approach to policing is a priority for Nolan and his team so we are so pleased to work together and help force the Force to review what is currently in place.
